Ormoc's 2nd Pasalamat Tugob Festival

After the breaking traditional Charter Day activities last year, the 2nd Pasalamat Tugob Festival is once again highlighting the 64th Charter Day celebration in Ormoc City, Leyte.

Tugob means “abundant” in the Visayan local dialect. The festival aims to showcase the 11 products identified to be abundant in the city namely: steam, water, pineapple, sugarcane, cassava, fish, livestock, coconut, vegetables, rice, and even sand and gravel. To translate these products, said to in abundance in the city, into a festival, different schools of the city were tapped to depict it.

One of  the highlight of the event is the Search for Ms. Tugob Queen Festival.  There were nine crop of beautiful and ravishing ladies vying for this year’s Miss Tugob Queen Festival. The lass from Western Leyte College was crowned who represent the sugarcane and was also the recipient of most minor awards like Best in Festival Costume, Solo Performer and Production Presentation.

Another highlight of the event is the street dancing where it took place at the main streets of the city in the morning and the final dance showdown was held at the open field of Ormoc Central School with at the end, an award to the best contingent was given.

The contingent from Eastern Visayas State University - Ormoc City Campus who represent the steam defeat their title as grand champion; they represent coconut last year and were able to join the Sinulog 2010 in Cebu City. They bagged the grand prize which was P125,000 plus trophy and they also won the third prize in the street dance competition, bagging P5,000.

The Ormoc Garden Club will also present a garden show, while the City Agriculture and Services Office will also hold an Aqua and Agriculture Trade wherein a contest in landscaping and booth exhibits will also be featured.

Another highlight is the sky diving activity by the Cebu Parachuters Club where the participants will land at the city plaza.

At night, a fireworks display colors the night.

The Ormocanons hope that Tugob Festival, if held annually, will eventually become a tourist attraction for the city in the likes of Sinulog in Cebu and the Maskara Festival in Bacolod.
